Housing Project For Flood Victims Of Pakistan

According to the UN, Pakistan had suffered the worst flooding in history (August, 2010) which had affected 14 million people and killed 2000. Pakistan Government statistics indicated the floods directly affected about 20 million people, most of whom suffered destruction of property, disruption in their livelihood and infrastructure damage. In addition, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that ten million people were forced to drink unsafe water. The flood had left the underground water contaminated.
Al-Mustafa Welfare Trust had set up 50 relief camps for one month and accommodated more then 5000 families in all flood areas. Al-Mustafa has been providing free accommodation and food. After the floods were over, 100 free field medical camps had been arranged around all the flood hit areas. These camps were erected on the back of the WHO report that stated 3.5 million children were at risk of suffering from various fatal diseases such as diarrhoea, malaria, and skin diseases . Theses camps have been very successful so far and have played a vital role to provide free medical facilities to the flood affected people from the far away areas of Pakistan.
Furthermore, Al-Mustafa has started to build 1000 homes in various flood hit areas. The housing scheme has already begun, starting with the worst hit areas of Punjab. The Mirahanwali village in the district of Muzafargur has been the most affected area which is also a highly deprived region of Punjab. The total population of the village is more than 3000, flood has washed away all the houses in the area. The housing project was started in the first week of March, 2011.
The key achievements of the housing rehabilitation scheme so far in village Mirhanwali   are as follows:
·         100 houses have been completed on 15 June, 2011.
·         One house consists of one room, kitchen, bathroom and boundary wall.
·         One tube well has been installed, which is providing clean water to the village.
·         The construction of a school and mosque is expected to be completed in August, 2011.
